Highway 49 and Route 1A are key traffic routes Route 1A runs from north to south whereas Highway 49 runs entirely in Thue Thien – Hue Province. It has the length of over 100 km connecting Highway 49 B (Thuan An) and Ho Chi Minh Road (Highway 14). Highway 49 is also a bridge linking Hue City with Thuan An Beach, A Luoi District and northern Central Highlands. Therefore, it has a very important role to play in the economic and societal development of Thue Thien- Hue Province.
If running on Route 1A, trucks will go through Quang Tri Town, then turn on Highway 49B at My Chanh Intersection (Hai Chanh Commune, Hai Lang, Quang Tri Province). However, if goods are delivered in A Luoi District, drivers should not choose Highway 49B. Despite the fact that Highway 49B links with Highway 49 at Thao Long Dam (Tan Duong Commune, Thuan An Town), drivers will go on a longer route of about 105 km. Highway 49B runs along the coastal line and crosses the longest dams in Asia such as Tam Giang, Sam, Chuon, Thuy Tu, Da Bac, Cau Hai and so forth. If delivering goods at one of the abovementioned places, driver should go on Highway 49B. When goods are unloaded in A Luoi District, from Quang Tri Town, drivers continue following Route 1A to Kim Phung (near Tuan Bridge), then turn on Highway 49 and run toward Ho Chi Minh Road.
If Ho Chi Minh Road is drivers’ choice to transport goods from Hanoi to A Luoi District, you will run through northern Central Highlands where Ho Chi Minh Road joins Highway 14. Drivers follow Highway 14 to reach Son Thuy Commune, then turn left on Highway 49 and run another 5km to arrive in A Luoi, a rural district bordering Laos of Thue Thien Hue Province. A Luoi District is connected with Hue City by Highway 49, a dangerous road with three high passes including Kim Quy Pass of 16 km. Thanks to the cooperation of the Ministry of Traffic and Transportation, National Defense Ministry, the Ministry of Construction and local authority, Highway 49 has become a key route in the area of western Truong Son Range.
Both of Highway 49 and 49 B play vital roles in the traffic system of Thue Thien Hue Province. However, due to an increasing number of vehicles running on these routes, their quality of road surfaces are deteriorating gradually. The government has decided to renovate and repair them in the future, so it is hoped that the upgraded routes will stimulate strongly goods transport services on Highway 49 ./.
