Situated about 320 km to the northwest Hanoi, Son La is one of many mountainous provinces which shares the common border with Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Hoa Binh, Dien Bien and Thanh Hoa. Son La also shares a long border of 250 km with Laos with 2 international border gates of Long Sap and Chieng Khuong. Therefore, there is a wide range of business activities taking place among domestic provinces and different countries in Son La Province, meaning that there is also an increasing demand for transporting goods from Hanoi to Son La in particular and from Son La to other provinces and cities in general. Although Son La is still a mountainous province with many difficulties, the local authority and Son La’s residents have intensified their efforts to stimulate the economic development and improve people’s living standard, bringing many considerable changes to Son La Province. There are 6 routes running through Son La, namely Highway 6, Highway 37, Highway 43, Highway 219 and Highway 32B with the total length of 597 km. Highway 6, a main traffic route conneting Hanoi Capital with Son La, has been upgraded to encourage goods transportation to Son La Province. Highway 43, a national road, is also one of many important routes running in Son La. With the length of over 100 km, it starts at the intersection of Gia Phu, and ends at the Border Gate of Pa Hang (or Long Sap).

Highway 43 meets Highway 6 in Moc Chau Town and runs to Van Yen Ferry crossing Da River. If having the intention of dispatching goods from Moc Chau Town to Son La, drivers turn into Highway 43, then runs 30 km to Van Yen Ferry. From there, you go another 30 km to reach Phu Yen Town. Thanks to the high quality of road surface, drivers can go easily on this route, but according to driver Do Quoc Truong, you are still very careful when driving in thick fog which may affects the invisibility. Driver Nguyen Thanh Tung also shared the information of Van Yen Ferry Schedule with us. He said: “ Van Yen Ferry operates continually from 5 am to 9 pm with the daily average of 43 journeys. It stops activities from May to July when the river level is shallow”.
Son La Province plays an important role in connecting Hanoi – Hoa Binh with Dien Bien and Lai Chau on Highway 6, with Thanh Hoa Province on Highway 43. Besides, it also has two borders of Long Sap and Chien Khuong connecting northern provinces of Laos. Therefore, there is a large number of transport journeys between Son La and other provinces and cities.
