Highway 15 is an intercity road connecting Hoa Binh and Quang Tri Province. Some sections going through Quang Binh and Nghe An, Ha Tinh of this highway are also parts of Ho Chi Minh Road. Along with Highway 12A, 14, Highway 15 also runs along the foothills of Truong Son Mountain to the south. Most of Highway 12A, 14 and 15 was broadened and combined with Ho Chi Minh Road. From the intersection of Tong Dau (Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province), you can see Mai Chau Town with stilts houses and green paddy fields if standing on the top of Thung Khe.
After arriving in Van Mai Commune (Mai Chau District), Highway 15 runs through the intersection of Co Luong. From then, it goes along Xia River (the starting point of Ma River) and reaches the following areas: Thach Mai, Ban Do, Quan Hoa District (Thanh Hoa Province). Highway 15 is divided into two branches, namely 15A and 15C. At Dong Tam Town (Quan Hoa District), it intersects with Highway 217.
The section 15C starts from Phu Thanh Commune (Quan Hoa District, Thanh Hoa Province) and goes through the nature conservation center of Pu Luong ( at Ba Thuoc and Quan Hoa District)
In 2013, the fact that Highway 15A was widened and modernized played an important role in linking north western provinces with Highway 217, Ho Chi Minh Road, Highway 6, creating a comprehensive traffic system and becoming the shortest road connecting north western provinces with ports. This generates favorable conditions to stimulate cultural exchange, business activities between regions and support the integration process of west Thanh Hoa and north western provinces. However, due to the dearth of budget and longtime construction, the quality Highway 15 today is deteriorating and cannot meet the demands for traffic and the region’s economic development. The upgrade and renovation projects are expected to stimulate the progress in many fields.
Highway 15B (Bien Hoa Province) starts from the intersection of Vuon Mit, then cuts through Highway 51 (or Nguyen Ai Quoc Road)and finishes at Suoi Quan Bridge (Gate 11). Highway 15B intersects with Highway 1A at Tam Hiep Crossroads and goes through districts of Trung Dung, Thong Nhat, Tan Tien, Tan Mai, Tam Hiep, Tam Hoa, Binh Da, An Binh, Long Binh, Long Tinh Tan and Phuoc Tan Commune. Today, the highway is divided into two sections and renamed. The section of Pham Van Thuan is from Vuon Mit Intersection to Tam Hiep Roundabout and the section of Bui Van Hoa from Tam Hiep to Gate 11.
Highway 15D links Ho Chi Minh Road to La Lay Border Gate (Dakrong District, Quang Tri Province). Its road quality is currently at the level of 5 and 6 with two bridges of La Hot and Dakrong which usually flood and cause traffic jams especially in the rain season. The Prime Minister has agreed to upgrade Lalay Border Gate to an international gate. Therefore, in the near future, Highway 15D will be renovated and broadened to meet the high demands for international, domestic goods exchange and traffic vehicles./.
